Recently I watched an episode of Psych, titled “Ferry Tale”.

In this episode the character Gus (Dule Hill) is given a glass of the Mexican drink Horchata. He falls in love with its sweet taste and can’t stop sipping it.

It reminded me of a drink my childhood friend Sylvia’s mom would give us after a day of playing in the summer sun. She called it “My Horchata” and gave my mom the recipe because I loved it so much.

Here is Sylvia’s mom’s recipe of this delicious drink.

2 cups of uncooked white rice, coarsely grounded

8 cups water

1/2 cup sugar

5 cinnamon sticks

2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon

2 cups milk

1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

In a large pitcher, stir all ingredients. Refrigerate for at least 5 hours but overnight is better.

When you’re ready to serve remove the cinnamon sticks and pour the Horchata through a coffee filter to remove the rice.
